You don’t hear about bedbugs a lot because when people get them they are so ashamed. The reality is that bedbugs are in most hotels and in many homes across the UK and nobody notices until it’s too late. The cause is a combination of increased travel around the world, and the reduced expectations of vacuum cleaning power introduced by EU legislation. We cannot eradicate bedbugs in the UK but we can minimise the risk and keep them away from our beds.

It is unlikely you’d notice if you had one or two bedbugs in your home. You kill visiting bugs and prevent them setting up home by following the instructions below. But if you do not have the right regime to control them, an infestation may take hold. If you leave the deep vacuuming long enough, bedbugs can set up home in your beds and will be the worst nightmare you ever had.

The ‘bedbug industry’ is very behind the times and is dominated by “exterminators” who are primarily concerned with killing the bugs, and not removal or prevention . It relies on spraying toxic chemicals where you sleep, and leaves dead bugs and feces in your bed. There are other types of extermination which can be very expensive and stressful. High-pressure steam and power extraction is the only safe way to control and infestation.

Bedbugs arrive in your home on luggage or on clothing. They will wonder around your home until they find a place to live which is close to the head of your bed. They will hide in seams or crevices, and only come out at night to feed on you.

If you do not vacuum up any visiting bugs, they can start to breed. In 3-6 Months you can expect to find markings like this on mattresses and around your bed. This indicates an established infestation which will require professional assistance.

If you ever wake in the morning with tiny spots of unexplained blood on your sheets, you possibly have one or two bedbugs in your home. In extreme cases you may get severe reactions.

Additional Information

Please note that regular vacuuming is the only way to avoid an infestation. If you wait until you see signs of bugs you have waited too long.

  • Bedbugs are much bigger than you might expect (Adults can be 10 times bigger than a flea)
  • Baby bedbugs are clear and almost invisible. They turn darker when they have ad a drink of your blood.
  • They will set up home in a place where you wont see them.
  • The busiest time of day is around 2am when they know you’ll be asleep in bed
  • That is when they come out of their hiding places and crawl over you to get a good feeding.
  • Check your sheets each morning. Tiny spots of blood with no obvious cause could be a sign of a nigh time feast.
  • Pull back the seems in your mattress to look for bugs or feces (little black spots could indicate an infestation)

If you have no signs at all of bedbugs in your home then as long as you keep on top of the cleaning regime it is unlikely that you will ever have a problem. Remember that prevention is better than cure.
